Next Gen Higher Nationals and grading

One of the big changes introduced with Next Generation (Next Gen) Higher National Qualifications (HNQs) is the introduction of grading. Current HNQs aren’t graded (one unit is graded). Next Gen qualifications will be graded as follows:

  • Achieved
  • Achieved with Merit
  • Achieved with Distinction

A key difference is that this grading is for theĀ whole qualification.

HNC Computing (the first modernised Computing qualification) is currently being piloted in two Scottish colleges. We met with the subjects teams in both centres yesterday to discuss the grading model.

It was a good meeting with a great turn-out from both sets of staff. The purpose of the meeting was for SQA to explain the grading model and get feedback on how we plan to develop it. The grading model comprisesĀ two components:

  1. Learner portfolio
  2. Project.

The portfolio will showcase each learner’s best work during the qualification. The project will be a large-scale team project. Both components will be separately graded and those grades combined into an overall grade. For example, to gain a Distinction, learners will have to get Distinctions for both portfolio and project.

We’re in the process of clarifying our thinking about the required rubrics to grade each component. We plan to work with the subject teams in each pilot centre to help us do that. The pilot year provides us with an opportunity to test and refine the model so the grading model is clear and robust if/when these new qualifications are available to everyone.
