I recently posted<\/a> information about the planned review of a number of Higher National awards in Computing. I’m pleased to let you know that we’re commencing this large development by reviewing HNC Computing. We plan to update five HN qualifications<\/strong> in total but it makes sense to commence with the HNC because this forms the first year of the HNDs.<\/p>\n

HNC Computing<\/strong>
\nHND Computer Science<\/strong>
\nHND Data Science<\/strong>
\nHND Networking & Infrastructure<\/strong>
\nHND Software Development.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A Qualification Development Team (QDT) has been formed and the first (online) meeting takes place next week, after which I’ll let you know our plans.<\/p>\n

The revised HNC will be one of the first qualifications (if not the first) to be part of the “next generation” of Higher National awards, using revised design rules and other significant changes. The new awards will update the current qualifications by including, among other things, Skills 4.0.<\/a> The awards were last revised in 2012, since when a great deal of change has happened in the sector. So a significant update to content will be required to ensure that AI, cloud computing, data science and machine learning is included.<\/p>\n

Given the current circumstances, it’s hard to predict when the refreshed HNC will be available but we’re hoping to develop it rapidly and have it available to centres as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
