{"id":3438,"date":"2020-07-17T13:07:31","date_gmt":"2020-07-17T12:07:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qualifications.gov.scot\/computing\/?p=3438"},"modified":"2020-07-17T13:07:31","modified_gmt":"2020-07-17T12:07:31","slug":"update-on-new-higher-nationals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qualifications.gov.scot\/computing\/update-on-new-higher-nationals\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on new Higher Nationals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Regular readers will know that Computing is one of the pilot areas for the development of new types of Higher National (HN) awards, part of SQA&#8217;s <em>Next Generation<\/em> of HN awards. I first <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qualifications.gov.scot\/computing\/review-of-higher-national-qualifications-in-computing\/\">announced this development in February<\/a>. Since then, a Qualification Development Team (QDT) has been formed (consisting of over 30 representatives of colleges, schools, universities and employers) and <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qualifications.gov.scot\/computing\/first-meeting-of-the-development-team-for-hnc-computing\/\">met a couple of times<\/a>. We&#8217;ve also <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qualifications.gov.scot\/computing\/lead-developers-for-hn-next-gen\/\">selected lead developers<\/a> for each qualification.<\/p>\n<p>The leads have been busy over the summer, creating frameworks for each of their respective awards. We&#8217;re developing new frameworks for the following qualifications.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HNC Computing<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>HND Computer Science<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>HND Data Science<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>HND Networking &amp; Infrastructure<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>HND Software Development.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These new awards will be based on <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qualifications.gov.scot\/computing\/design-of-new-higher-national-awards\/\">new design parameters<\/a> and will look different from existing qualifications. Among other changes, they will have fewer and bigger units &#8212; and include &#8220;metaskills&#8221;, based on Skills Development Scotland&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk\/what-we-do\/skills-planning\/skills4-0\/\">Skills 4.0<\/a> framework.<\/p>\n<p>Right now, we&#8217;re busy designing the new frameworks, which are shaping up well. I hope to have draft frameworks ready in the next few weeks. When we finalise these, we&#8217;ll get down to writing the contents of each component unit.
