{"id":3526,"date":"2020-11-26T10:56:41","date_gmt":"2020-11-26T10:56:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.qualifications.gov.scot\/computing\/?p=3526"},"modified":"2020-11-26T10:56:41","modified_gmt":"2020-11-26T10:56:41","slug":"hn-next-generation-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.qualifications.gov.scot\/computing\/hn-next-generation-update\/","title":{"rendered":"HN Next Generation update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s been <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.qualifications.gov.scot\/computing\/update-on-new-higher-nationals\/\">a while<\/a> since I last updated you about the &#8220;HN-Next Gen&#8221; initiative so this seems a good time to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Computing is one of three subjects (along with Broadcasting &amp; TV and Engineering) that will prototype new Higher National qualifications during the next couple of years. This will be done in two phases.<\/p>\n<p>Phase 1: HNC qualifications, piloted during session 2021\/22.<br \/>\nPhase 2: HND qualifications, piloted during session 2022\/23.<\/p>\n<p>Five Computing qualifications are involved in the development.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>HNC Computing<br \/>\nHND Computer Science<br \/>\nHND Data Science<br \/>\nHND Networking &amp; Infrastructure<br \/>\nHND Software Development.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The existing HND Networking and HND Technical Support will be replaced with HND Networking &amp; Infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re currently considering moving HND Data Science to phase 1 of the development. This is the only new qualification (there&#8217;s no existing HND Data Science) and there&#8217;s some urgency about its availability.<\/p>\n<p>New Higher Nationals will be different from existing Higher Nationals in a number of respects including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inclusion of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillsdevelopmentscotland.co.uk\/what-we-do\/skills-planning-alignment\/skills4-0\/\">metaskills<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Fewer, larger units<\/li>\n<li>Less assessment<\/li>\n<li>Project based learning<\/li>\n<li>New approach to grading.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>One of the biggest changes is the separation of HNC and HND so that, in future, HNDs will be stand-alone, Level 8 qualifications in their own right. Currently, HNDs are two year programmes that build on HNCs.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve made significant progress over the last six months. A Qualification Development Team (QDT) has been created (consisting of 31 members), lead developers have been selected for each qualification, draft frameworks have been created, and unit outlines written for the new units.<\/p>\n<p>None of this is final but we&#8217;re in a good position to be ready to pilot new HNs from next session.
