In Argyll, that is happening in kitchens, gardens, aquaculture businesses, offices and beyond, where apprentices are building careers without having to leave the communities they know.<\/p>\n<h2>The partnership behind it<\/h2>\n<p>Argyll and Bute faces challenges common to many rural areas. The population is ageing, and young people often move away for education or work. UHI Argyll sees Modern Apprenticeships as part of the answer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our primary focus is to ensure opportunity for individuals to live, learn and work in Argyll. By offering Modern Apprenticeships across a variety of sectors, we hope to encourage young people to stay, become valued members of the workforce, and contribute to the local economy.&#8221; Dawn Miller, Apprenticeships Manager, UHI Argyll<\/p>\n<p>It started by listening to local employers, particularly in hospitality, who found it hard to release staff for full-time study. They wanted flexibility, practical assessment and qualifications that matched real job roles. So UHI Argyll moved Modern Apprenticeships out of the traditional curriculum and into a specialist work-based learning team, which provides:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a single point of contact for employers<\/li>\n<li>a streamlined way to identify skills needs<\/li>\n<li>a dedicated MA Support Officer to manage 13-week reviews<\/li>\n<li>assessors who tailor each SVQ to the job role and the business<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;Work-based learning is employers&#8217; opportunity to shape the next generation of their workforce. If employers invest in their staff, their staff are more likely to stay.&#8221; Dawn Miller<\/p>\n<h2>Two journeys<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Lewis MacLeod<\/strong> trained in Hospitality under chef William Rocks at Tigh an Truish on the Isle of Seil. After completing his Modern Apprenticeship with UHI Argyll, he was promoted and now runs the kitchen. He has since used that experience to enhance Achamore Gardens on the Isle of Gigha, bringing globally recognised horticultural expertise back to a rural Scottish community. Here is what other UHI Argyll apprentices say about the difference it has made.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve grown so much as a person and I&#8217;ve become so much more confident, not only at work, but in the rest of my life too.&#8221; Evie Edgington, Professional Cookery, SCQF Level 5<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve changed the way I look at things. I&#8217;m more forward-thinking\u2026 I see the bigger picture.&#8221; Ruairidh Neilly, Aquaculture, SCQF Levels 5 and 7, and a finalist at the Scottish Apprenticeship Awards 2023<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My MA has been extremely valuable in giving me experience for the job I want permanently.&#8221; Cameron Allan, Business and Administration, SCQF Level 6, Oban Airport<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a great opportunity to learn on the job and get paid well to do it.&#8221; Sara MacIntyre, Hospitality: Supervision and Leadership, SCQF Level 7<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The apprenticeship reaffirmed anything I wasn&#8217;t 100% confident in.&#8221; Ali Guy, Aquaculture, SCQF Level 7<\/p>\n<h2>So what is an SVQ?<\/h2>\n<p>A Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) is a way of proving you can do a job well. Instead of sitting exams, you are assessed on how you perform your everyday work. Modern Apprenticeships are built on SVQs, so apprentices earn a recognised qualification while they earn a wage.<\/p>\n<p>SVQs sit within the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF), which shows how qualifications of all kinds fit together. The apprentices above span SCQF levels 5 to 7, which shows the range of levels a work-based route can reach.<\/p>\n<h2>A message from Qualifications Scotland<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;UHI Argyll has built a brilliant model for work-based learning in one of Scotland&#8217;s most geographically diverse regions. Many industries throughout Scotland could benefit from embedding Modern Apprenticeships into their workforce development planning.
