The Scottish Government has created a National Leadership Group (NLG) on cyber security and part of that Group’s remit was to form sub-groups dedicated to specific aspects of cyber security. I was invited to the Cyber Resilience Learning Network (CRLN). The committee met for the first time on Friday in the Scottish Government offices in Glasgow. The sub-group’s remit is essentially to explore ways of improving cyber resilience (which is about education and behaviours more than systems and processes) among…

The validation event for the refreshed HNC/D Computer Games Development took place yesterday. I’m delighted to report that the proposed changes were validated with conditions. The purpose of a validation event is for a Validation Panel (which must consist of people who were not involved in the development) to scrutinise a new (or revised) qualification by asking questions of the Qualification Development Team (QDT). The Panel consisted of representatives of colleges, universities, employers and SQA. I thought that yesterday’s validation…

We achieved a milestone on Twitter today. We now have 750 followers. The team has been tweeting since 2004 and our “following” has gradually increased during that time. We don’t abuse Twitter. We only use it for matters directly relating to Computing qualifications. So, I promise, no personal stuff or speeches. It’s the simplest way for you to keep up-to-date with what we’re doing and how you can get involved. If you don’t follow us already, you can follow us via this URL.…

The Tech Partnership (which replaced E-Skills) recently produced a list of digital occupations and the sorts of skills needed by people who want to pursue these careers. You can see the “occupational map” here [PDF]. It contains a useful list of contemporary job titles, which might be useful to you when you market your qualifications.

We’re often asked if/when Assessment Support Packs (ASPs) will be available for a specific unit or if tests are available on SOLAR (our e-assessment system). The short answer is: we don’t know. ASPs and SOLAR are handled by the Support Materials team so we have to pass queries onto them. To save yourself time, it would be faster to contact a member of the Support Materials team directly. You can find out if ASPs are available by contacting asm@sqa.org.uk and you can…

A Quality Network meeting was held last Wednesday to support centres that offer SVQs and CBQs in Computing. These are workplace qualifications (mostly) offered by training providers. My team deal with three sectors: (1) schools; (2) colleges; and (3) training centres. During the last few years, training centres haven’t received the same attention as colleges and schools. So this event was overdue. There was an excellent turnout with over 30 people in attendance and presentations from Skills Development Scotland, Tech Partnership…

The Sector Panel for Computing met on Tuesday. The purpose of the Panel is to provide strategic advice to SQA about external developments in the sector. Members are drawn from industry (including professional bodies), education (schools, colleges and universities) and the third sector. One of the most important functions of the Panel is to ensure that the qualification portfolio matches the needs of stakeholders. So a standing item at every meeting is to discuss my operational plan. This week’s meeting…
